Hands down: you need much, much less than most people on the internet say. At least that's what we believe and we've put together the minimum list for the baby below. You can always buy more later, but in our opinion the basics are absolutely sufficient to start with.
Clothing
# 6 Bodysuits (probably size 56/62 if your baby is not coming too early)
# 6 (total) Rompers or shirt and pants combinations
# 2 warm jackets made of e.g. wool
# 2 Sleeping bags
# 4 Pajamas (but the normal rompers and shirt/pants combinations can also be used)
# 1 Hat
# 1 pair of thick socks or woolen shoes
# If it is very cold outside: wool suit or other overall to put on
Hygiene
# 6 Burp cloths
# 6 Molton cloths
# 1 Bathing place (baby bath, bath bucket, etc.) and bath thermometer
# For cleaning: cotton pads or washcloths and a bowl for water (and/or wet wipes)
# Wound protection ointment and, if you want, healing wool for the bottom
# If necessary, 1-2 pacifiers for testing
# Diapers (probably size 1)
# Baby nail scissors
Furniture and comfort
In our opinion, only a changing table is really essential, at least for your back. The rest is optional, but has served us well:
# Baby blanket to cover and lie on
# Trash can at the changing table for diapers
# Baby bed/extra bed with mattress and bed sheet (if the child is not supposed to sleep in your bed)
Movement
Here you can use just one of the suggested methods. Or just one to start with and then more later. Or everything from the beginning. Whatever suits you.
# Baby sling or newborn carrier
# Stroller and rain cover for the stroller (in winter also with fleece or fur bag)
# If you use a car: approved safety seat/baby seat
# Possibly a larger burp cloth to hang over the carrier/stroller/child seat when it is very sunny
Food
If you are breastfeeding, you obviously don't need anything here. And if you are not breastfeeding and already know that, you will need a few things.
# approx. 6-8 (wide-neck) bottles with teats in the smallest size
# Bottle brush
# If you want to pump: breast pump, otherwise: infant formula
Please remember: these are just recommendations. You can certainly get by with much less, you can borrow many of the things from friends and even get them spontaneously while you are in bed or have them bought for you. Everything is OK.
